Growing Number of High School Student
Smoking
A survey has found about 13 percent
of first-time smokers in the country are junior high school students. It also
revealed 89 percent of young female employees were smokers.
The survey was conducted in five major cities across the country, including Surakarta in Central Java.
Muhammad Syahril Mansyur, the Surakarta Health Agency’s respiratory illness division, said that the finding of the survey showed an alarming growth rate of Indonesian smokers. "This situation is a cause for concern,” he said. “It appears the country’s younger generation is uneducated about the health risks of smoking.”
The Indonesian anti-tobacco campaign has reportedly been deemed as ineffective as the government refuses to sign the international convention on tobacco control. It said that cigarette producers contributed to a large amount to state revenue and gave jobs to thousands of workers.

Winning Award for Airport Toilet
Surabaya's Juanda International Airport has won the Culture and Tourism Ministry's 2009 toilet award, beating out 2007 winner Denpasar's Ngurah Rai Airport, which now drops to fourth. Indonesia's main gateway, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, just outside Jakarta, moves up from fourth in 2007 to second, in the biennial "Sapta Pesona Clean Public Toilet Award".
The award was first handed out in 2007, and has so far involved only international airports. Acting Culture and Tourism Minister Muhammad Nuh said he expected the award in future to also cover public toilets at tourist sites across the country.
"Granting the award to those running public toilets at tourist sites is expected to improve the quality of products and services, particularly in term of cleanliness . as part of efforts to enhance the image of national culture," Nuh said during the award presentation ceremony.
Jakarta: the spreading of Lapindo hot mudflow post explosion of Pertamina’s gas pipe
forced the residents of Kedungbendo and Renokenongo villages to evacuate.
The mudflow also flooded half of the Tanggulangin anggun
Sejahtera housing complex in Sidoarjo. Mudflow of more than half a meter in
depth flooded 66, 0448 houses in this complex.
“The residents were evacuate to Pasar baru, which was previously
a shelter for 2, 605 families whose houses were flooded by mudflows”, said
Syaiful Illah, a deputy regent of Sidoarjo, yesterday (16 november 2006)
From Tempo’s monitoring, the refugees came continuously by
trucks, public transportations and motorcycles. They straightaway
occupied the market, kiosks and stalls by spreading out mats and pillow
for sleeping.
Government officials appeared to be busy preparing mass kitchens
and supplying rice, instant noodles, cooking oil and other needs. “We took the
food from Sidoarjo Social Service”, said Syaiful Illah. “There hasn’t been any
aid provided by Lapindo”. In the mean time, the National team for mudflow
relief in Sidoarjo has not been able to block mudflow in the gas pipe explosion
South Borneo Mangrove Forest Severely Damaged
Damaged Mangrove Forest
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sat, 05/28/2011 8:26 PM
A local councilor claims 147,000 hectares of the 166,000 hectares of mangrove forest in South Borneo were destroyed.
“Only 19000 hectares are still in good condition. The rest has razed,” the head of the South Borneo Regional Representatives Council Commission II, Mohammad Ihsanuddin, was quoted as saying Saturday by news portal tribunnews.com.
Ihsanuddin blamed the damage on human encroachment, citing the construction of a special port or embankment as one example.
He said mangrove forests were a necessary part of the local ecosystem, as they served to protect the area from seawater abrasion and provide breeding areas for fish.
Ihsanuddin claimed mangrove plants also helped prevent the spread of avian influenza. He claimed that at the height of the avian influenza outbreak, the North Sumatra administration added mangrove leaves into livestock feed and no farm fowl contracted the disease.
He called on the local administration to not easily issue licenses to businesses exploiting mangrove areas.
I hope It will useful for you all. See ya next time (*≧▽≦)
